Steve Garnett
My name is Steve Garnett and I am a PhD student at Canterbury Christ Church University. My topic is officially titled 'England and Algiers, 1603-1714' and the core of my research is being undertaken in the deposit labelled 'State Papers 71 which is held at the National Archives in London. This archive documents England's, later Britain's, relationship with the Barbary States between 1577 and 1780, which contemporaries understood to be the Ottoman Regencies of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli plus the independent and by the late 1600s, unified empire of Morocco...
The State Papers 71 provide a brilliant insight into the early modern Mediterranean and England's place in it. I hope the blog will do this remarkable archive justice.
